Luna Tree is run with as much kindness for our planet as we can possibly manage. Passion for the environment and all its inhabitants has us treading as lightly as we can, how we can. We are always looking of ways to improve sustainability as a business.
Our Silver
Mining is by its nature is a dangerous and dirty job. Extraction of silver from the earth has been going on since humankind got a taste for the shiny stuff and the need to satisfy the primal urge to adorn themselves. Silver is mainly found mixed in with seams of copper and the extraction techniques from the minerals it is found with not that great for the environment.
Silver mining happens all over the world, from the US, Russia, Chile, Poland, Bolivia and even the UK. Mexico is the largest producer, closely followed by China. Depending on the mining company and area, silver mining may occur in an open pit or in an underground mine. Different locations warrant different mining techniques, depending on the types of rocks, local practices and customs and safety considerations.
At Luna Tree, recycled silver is our go to as a raw material for all our jewellery. By using recycled silver, we are protecting people from the dangers of mining, the environment from land erosion and habitat disturbance, while greatly improving the carbon footprint for our metal of choice. Our recycled silver comes from recycled electrical equipment, jewellery over stocks, off cuts and mis created jewellery. Prized as a great electrical conductor, silver is used in all technologies from tvs to mobile phones, medicine, photography, solar energy and electric vehicles. Silver can be stripped from these items and reused to remain in a circular economy of use.
Silver can be reworked time and time again with no reduction in quality, making it the ultimate in recyclability.
The jewellery created in our UK studio is mainly created from pieces from our Thai artisan partners which do not pass our quality control.
Artisan Partners and Sustainability
Sustainable environmental practices have been developed within the community of our artisan partners with the use of solar panels enabling the village to run battery storage units in the evenings for light.
Slow Fashion
Our jewellery is timeless and ethereal in design. Our pieces can be worn for a lifetime for many different looks and occasions. Luna Tree is anti fast fashion and over consumption. We believe that beautiful handcrafted jewellery should be affordable for all, having pieces which work for many budgets. All our jewellery can be recycled.
Packaging
We provide all our products in 100% zero waste, plastic free packaging. All Luna Tree packaging is made from paper and all can be recycled. Our jewellery gift boxes and leaflets, along with the mailing boxes are all paper composition and enable us to leave no trace, except for beautiful jewellery!
The jewellery comes in protective clear bags made from potato and corn starches, which are made in the UK. These jewellery bags are EN13432 compostable PLA and can be landfilled or composted without environmental impact.
Our art prints are wrapped in paper and cardboard.
Our wholesale orders are always sent in reused boxes.
At Luna Tree we are continually looking at ways to improve our ethical performance as a business and to reduce our impact on the earth. We have worked hard to reduce and eliminate plastic where we can from our supply chain. We are a Silver Status Plastic Free Champion with Surfers Against Sewage.
