July - Carnelian

Carnelian is a birthstone for July and a modern alternative stone to the traditional stone of a Ruby.

It has a rich history and was used in Bronze Age Minoan culture for decorative items  at Knossos, Crete dating back to 1800BC. It was also used widely during the Roman empire for signet and wax seal rings. The Romans were a clever lot realising that hot wax will not stick to carnelian.

The ancient Egyptians worked carnelian into jewellery and an abundance of scarab beetles too. There are some fantastic pieces from the tomb of Tutankhamun in the Cairo museum.

Carnelian is  also a Sacral Chakra stone. Relating to our pleasure and sexuality, new experiences and our acceptance of others. It is associated with taking bold action, boosting deep desires and powerful creative instincts.
It gives courage, promotes positive life choices, dispels apathy and motivates for success. This stone is also useful for overcoming abuse, especially toward the self. A protector and self care stone.
